Why You Should Only Set 3 Main Goals Each Quarter

2022 is already here. While the new year is a common time to set resolutions and goals for ourselves, it’s also a time when we face a lot of doubt. You think, “can I reach these goals in the new year? Or “am I setting myself up for failure?” And this doubt does nothing to help your chances of actually accomplishing what you set out to.

That’s why I recommend setting three main goals for each quarter. In this blog, I will tell you how doing so will help you be more successful in 2022.

Focus

Lack of focus is the crusher if even the most attainable and achievable goals. Without focus, you could find yourself down a totally different path than the one you’d like to be on. In addition, setting big and broad goals can set you up for failure because you will struggle with being able to measure your success.

For example, let’s say you want to lose weight in the new year. That goal is very broad and lacks proper focus. Technically, you could achieve that goal by losing just one pound. But, you wouldn’t feel successful if you hoped to lose more. You could also lose weight in the middle of the year and gain it at the end of the year. Technically, you’ve reached your goal. See how a goal that lacks focus doesn’t serve you?

Now, for a more focused goal each quarter. For example, let’s say you want to lose and keep off 25 pounds by the end of the year.

Q1 – Lose 10 pounds by the end of the quarter.

Q2 – Lose 15 pounds by the end of the quarter.

Q3 – Maintain weight throughout the quarter.

Q4 – Maintain weight throughout the quarter.

Not only are the goals attainable and achievable, but they also give you clear measurements for success and allow you to create an actionable plan. 

Action Plan

Speaking of an actionable plan, let’s talk about how setting 3 main goals for the quarter can help you plan. Going back to our weight loss goal, you’ve got more focus than ever to lose 10 pounds in the first quarter. Your action plan may include working out three times a week, eating smaller portions, and cutting out snacks after midnight. The best part about this plan is you can use a modified version for the next quarter when you want to lose 15. It’s easier to know what next steps to take when you have a clear goal. 

Prioritization

One of the main reasons people struggle with their goals and resolutions is that they overwhelm themselves with goals. Setting up a dozen goals to be reached in 12 months can cause more stress than anything else. When you set 3 main goals each quarter, you give yourself the ability to prioritize your goals. You can easily understand what’s important to you and start implementing it into your life.
