What to Do When You Lack Self-Motivation

There is one thing that acts as a barrier between us and our goals more than any other factor – lack of motivation. Motivation can make planning, prioritizing, and achieving your goals so effortless. But, without motivation reaching your goals can feel impossible. But at Get It Done, we believe nothing is impossible, so let’s talk about how you can combat a lack of motivation and find success in your goals.

Understand What Motivation Is

So, let’s start by defining motivation because the more we know, the more we can work to get what we need. Motivation is being driven by one’s own desires and ambitions. So, what does that mean, really? Well, it means that something you’re passionate about pushes you to take action.

Now while this definition is somewhat internal, that doesn’t mean that you don’t also need external motivation. It’s important to understand also that our motivations develop and grow along with us. What you desired years ago may not drive you as much as it does today. That’s why it’s so important to understand the motivation.

Understand What Motivates You

Now, let’s take it a step further. We know what motivation is, but it differs from person to person. So first, you have to understand what it is that motivates you. For example, maybe you have a goal to start your own business, and you’re motivated by thinking about being your own boss and having a larger income. That drive to make a bigger salary drives you to take action to start your business.

A great way to learn more about you and your motivations is to take personality tests like 16 personalities which help you understand who you are. When you know yourself better, you can more accurately gauge what works and what doesn’t work for you, which will help you hone in on your motivation.

Give Yourself Grace

When we feel like we lack the motivation to work towards our goals, we often beat ourselves up about it. But most of the time, this doesn’t do us any good. You’re not making yourself more motivated by making yourself feel worse. It’s important to give yourself some grace here. If goal achievement were easy, everyone would consistently be hitting their goals.

Just like success with anything, it’s not a linear journey, and you will have setbacks. That’s why it’s essential not to use this time to make yourself feel bad but instead recognize that it’s normal to lack motivation from time to time. The important thing is to know that even if you’re not actively working on your goals, you’re constantly moving a step forward.
