How to Manage Stress with Goal Planning

Stress is an inevitable part of life that can affect us at any time. While feeling stress is normal, chronic stress can cause negative effects on our mental and physical health. That’s why it’s important to learn to manage stress to decrease the likelihood of long-term effects.

Many factors in life can cause stress especially our work whether it be a 9-5 job or a business. If your business is creating stress in your life, goal-planning can actually help you decrease your stress levels. Here are some steps to take to reduce stress.

Create a To-Do List

Disorganization can cause an overwhelming task list that can cause stress just thinking about it. Instead of trying to remember your tasks, risking forgetting them, and causing more anxiety, create a to-do list.

A to-do list offers you some much-needed organization especially if you’re juggling many tasks at a time. Think about your goals, then think about tasks that need to be completed to help you reach those goals. This list can break things out based on priority, deadline, or the difficulty of the task. You can even create your to-do list digitally, so you can take it anywhere and update as needed.

Make Manageable Action Steps

A to-do list is great, but to reach your goals, you need more than just a list of tasks. Break your list into some manageable action steps. This can help you stay in control and away from creating a list that causes more stress.

For example, if your goal is to create a consistent marketing strategy, on to-do list task might be: “write a marketing email each month.” For this, you can create the following action steps.

  • Brainstorm email topics
  • Write the first draft of the email
  • Edit email
  • Design and schedule email
  • Send to the email list

These action steps are manageable and direct, so you’re not stuck thinking of the next step or pondering how to get started. You can read more about creating action-based plans here.

Recognize Progress

What you do after you complete a task is just as important as completing the task itself. Especially, if you’re experiencing high levels of stress. We tend to face our ambitious goals as something to conquer and move on from. However, we need to take the time to reflect on our accomplishments.

Recognizing and even celebrating the progress on your goals is a great way to build self-worth and self-esteem which can reduce stress. If you struggle with celebrating your wins and accomplishments, read this blog here.

Make Goals for Self Care

When starting a business, we tend to focus on our clients, our team, and everyone but ourselves. If you struggle with anxiety, you need to start prioritizing self-care. Self-care is important because it offers us a chance to serve ourselves which makes our goal completion more possible.

Self-care can come in many shapes and forms and you will need to understand what works best for you. Things that are known to reduce anxiety include journaling, therapy/counseling, meditation, and even just activities you enjoy like watching tv or spending time with family.
Goal-planning can make you more productive, more successful, and even help you reduce the stress in your life. Want to learn how to goal plan? Book a call with me here.
